چکیده

Hydraulic fracturing has become the method of choice for extracting natural gas from shale deposits in the United States. As time has passed, environmental concerns have been raised as a result of research from the EPA and independent organizations, though most of it has focused strictly on the consequences this has for human health and land use, and little has focused on its effects on trophic cascades. The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether small leaks from hydraulically fractured gas wells can have definitive consequences on aquatic ecosystems by focusing on the lower levels of the trophic cascade. Methane-infused microcosms of a lake ecosystem did not demonstrate a significant increase in living zooplankton, though they did show a significant increase in dead zooplankton. More research on the mechanism behind the increase in mortality is needed to determine the overall consequences of small-scale leaks into aquatic communities before additional wells are drilled in areas that may be at risk.

Correction to methane concentrations in water wells unrelated to proximity to existing oil and gas wells in northeastern Pennsylvania.

Recent studies in northeastern Pennsylvania report higher concentrations of dissolved methane in domestic water wells associated with proximity to nearby gas-producing wells [ Osborn et al. Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U. S. A. 2011 , 108 , 8172 ] and [ Jackson et al. Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U. S. A. , 2013 , 110 , 11250 ]. We test this possible association by using Chesapeake Energy's baseline data s...

Genome-Centric Analysis of Microbial Populations Enriched by Hydraulic Fracture Fluid Additives in a Coal Bed Methane Production Well

Coal bed methane (CBM) is generated primarily through the microbial degradation of coal. Despite a limited understanding of the microorganisms responsible for this process, there is significant interest in developing methods to stimulate additional methane production from CBM wells. Physical techniques including hydraulic fracture stimulation are commonly applied to CBM wells, however the effec...

Top consumer abundance influences lake methane efflux

Lakes are important habitats for biogeochemical cycling of carbon. The organization and structure of aquatic communities influences the biogeochemical interactions between lakes and the atmosphere. Understanding how trophic structure regulates ecosystem functions and influences greenhouse gas efflux from lakes is critical to understanding global carbon cycling and climate change. With a whole-l...

Sublethal effects of silver in zooplankton: importance of exposure pathways and implications for toxicity testing.

In aquatic environments, organisms are exposed to contaminants via direct uptake from water and by trophic transfer. However, most toxicity tests only examine uptake via the dissolved phase. We compared the response of marine and freshwater crustacean zooplankton to silver following dissolved and food exposure. Silver, like other metals, concentrates in aquatic food chains and may exert toxicit...

Ancient dissolved methane in inland waters revealed by a new collection method at low field concentrations for radiocarbon (14C) analysis.

Methane (CH4) is a powerful greenhouse gas that plays a prominent role in the terrestrial carbon (C) cycle, and is released to the atmosphere from freshwater systems in numerous biomes globally. Radiocarbon (14C) analysis can indicate both the age and source of CH4 in natural environments. In contrast to CH4 present in bubbles released from aquatic sediments (ebullition), dissolved CH4 in lakes...
